Broncho Cheer Wins Regionals, Makes History

I’ve started to think of my website as a little journal for myself, versus a place I particularly plan to share with others. I forget about it so often, then will find myself wanting to sit down and put together a post about something I want to remember. Well, our varsity cheerleaders winning Regional for the first time ever is certainly one of those things.

On November 19th, 2023, our team of 15 won the Small Varsity Coed Game Day division at UCA Regionals. It was held at Hamilton Southeastern HS and we took home a score of 88.2. The Game Day division consists of four judged sections, all worth 25 points each: Band Chant, Situational Sideline, Cheer, and Fight Song.

Our varsity squad competed at three other competitions leading into Regional. We traveled all over Indiana and Kentucky and the miles added up to some great preparation for Regional, which is the most high-stakes comp of the year.

The Game Day division is so fantastic because it provides feedback on the elements of cheer that are most important to us- the things our crowd sees and the things we need to focus on for the football and basketball sideline. Judges give feedback on stunts and tumbling, plus they take notes on our voice inflection and volume, motion placement, synchronization, timing, and crowd leading ability.

Watching our kids- 11 girls and 4 boys- react to hearing their school name announced as winners was something I will never forget. We are very proud of the hard work that went into this accomplishment and we know this will lead to even more success in future years. I am one proud coach.

Cheer has been a part of my life for almost 20 years now. Coaching has been one of the hardest things I have ever done. I have cried over, and because of, athletes so many times. I have almost thrown in the towel. I have gotten called the worst names, been yelled at, been questioned, been up all night wondering if this is worth it. Winning a competition is a lot more than it may seem at first glance. To our team and to me as a coach, it is evidence of HARD work, perseverance, long hours, questioning ourselves, asking more of each other, and pushing through. For me, it serves as a reminder in trophy form that good will always outweigh bad, and that these special kids are always worth it.
