Kentucky Derby 150
It was a gorgeous- albeit a little wet on Friday and a little hot on Saturday- weekend in Louisville. I am thankful for mostly beautiful weather and two great days of racing. This weekend marked a big milestone, as it was the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. The KY Derby has been held on the first Saturday of May very year since its inaugural event in 1875 with the exception of two years: in 1947 it was held in June due to the end of WWII, and in 2020 it was pushed to September due to COVID. Lake Does Churchill Downs
I have been envisioning Lake’s first trip to Churchill Downs since before he was born. I ordered this tiny and perfect pink seersucker suit for him when I was pregnant, picturing him at his first Kentucky Derby. What I didn’t envision of course was a pandemic- The derby ran without spectators last year and this year, there were too many unknowns to anticipate if going would be a smart idea for us, especially with a toddler. DO try a Mint Julep For no other reason than to experience the official drink of the Derby, buy one of these overly-priced beverages. Why? It is the iconic Derby drink. Nearly 120,000 Mint Juleps are served at the racetrack on Derby weekend. Also, though they are $14 a pop, they are served in glass cups and you get to keep those so be sure to snag one as a souvenir.
