The collection below includes poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and options suited for both teenagers and adults. Please consider adding some of these titles to your home or classroom collection. If you have additional books that you think I should know about, or a way that I can improve upon this post, please let me know! Be the Change: Diverse Toys to Raise Compassionate Children

Every day, wherever I go, I am a teacher. I am a teacher in my classroom with my high school students, I am a teacher at home with my son, and I am a teacher on the sideline with my athletes. I think right now it can feel overwhelming to find a meaningful way to go beyond posting a black square and actually do the work required of all of us to end racism and show support of, acceptance of, and love for, the Black community. For me personally, I feel that teaching is my way of helping. I feel it is my duty to try harder to raise children…

Best of Baby Gear: My Favorite baby items

Favorite burp rags and bibs: Copper Pearl brand for both- Quality material, stands up in the wash, soft, thick, and absorbent. Plus, I like bandanna bibs best in terms of shape and fit and Copper Pearl’s products are adorable. Favorite lotions and soaps/shampoos: Aveeno and Burt’s Bees products are wonderful smells and nice on baby’s skin. The lavender products make for a good bedtime wind-down vibe. Favorite diaper rash product: Aquaphor is good for this use, but also for rough patches on baby’s skin or rashes. It is a multi-use thing you’ll get great use out of all the time. Favorite bath products: fun hooded towels, thin wash cloths are…

    Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day! In celebration, I wanted to say thank you to the women in my life who help me, encourage me, and inspire me. Grandma Mumaw: Thank you for letting me spend hours sketching fashion designs or dancing to the Tarzan soundtrack. Thank you for teaching me how important dogs are in our lives, letting me pick out desserts from the Schwan’s catalog, and always telling me when my butt looks good in a gown. Thank you for pushing Daniel and I to get things done like replacing our smoke alarms and getting new furniture. Thank you for taking me on trips around the country (and letting me turn on…

Maternity Travel Tips: The Secrets to Traveling During Pregnancy

I had a handful of travel plans already in place before I got pregnant, and the closer I got to those trips, the more nervous I got about the whole thing- How would my body react? Would I be so exhausted from the flights that I couldn’t recover once I got to my destination? Was it safe? How could I make it easier and less stressful? I started searching for advice online and I was frustrated to find that most articles simply suggested traveling during your second trimester. Ummm, not helpful.  When your best friend is getting married and you are the Matron of Honor and your husband is the…

    Must-Have Maternity Leggings

    1. Foucome Women’s Over The Belly Super Soft Leggings These are my most commonly worn pair- I love that they come with an adjustable band to tighten and loosen as my bump grows. They come in five colors and are under $20! They run VERY small- Mine are a size large. They are soft and cottony (with a touch of spandex), great for wearing with tops or under dresses, and absolutely no worries on being see-through. I like them just as much for out and about (often paired with sweatshirts and baseball hats at cheer practice) as I do for snuggling on the couch. Snag them on Amazon! 2. Blanqi Everyday Maternity…
